Jazz Scholarship Audition Requirements:

  1. Prepared piece in a jazz style ( these can include, but are not limited to: All-State Jazz Etudes, standard tunes from a jazz real book, any jazz transcription from a player specific to your instrument,i.e Miles Davis for trumpet, Charlie Parker for alto sax, etc.)
  2. Improvisation over your selected tune or a standard 12-bar Blues progression
  3. Sightreading of a standard jazz ensemble piece
  4. Sit in with Jazz Ensemble I and play and meet the band (Friday 3-4pm)

Please note Jazz Scholarship Auditions will be held on the Friday dates ONLY for each JSU audition weekend. This is to allow the prospective student to sit in with Jazz Ensemble I as the last part of their audition.

Separate auditions are acceptable in certain instances and these should be set up by contacting Dr. Chip Crotts at (256) 782-5883.

In applying for a JSU Music Scholarship, I understand that I must also apply for admission to JSU.  I realize that I should make separate application for all other scholarship opportunities through the Office of Financial Aid at JSU.
